Evaluation of the Second Step Bullying Prevention Project

Recognizing that bullying is a risk factor for future victimization or perpetration of sexual violence, the Sexual Violence Prevention and Education (SVPE) Program at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has sponsored over 20 schools in Kansas to implement the Committee for Children’s Second Step Curriculum. The curriculum teaches Social Emotional Learning skills such as empathy, non-violent problem solving and healthy relationship essentials. The elementary schools that participate in the program will also implement the Bullying Prevention Unit that is an add on to the basic Second Step program. The Center for Community Health and Development (CCHD) provides evaluation and technical support for the sponsored schools that are implementing the Second Step program. Evaluators at the Center analyze the student surveys starting in Fall 2019 to determine change in attitudes and perceptions since the schools began implementing the Second Step program.  An individual report is compiled for each school and cohort reports are compiled based on type of school, type of survey and length of time in the program.
