Application of a photography-based smartphone app to measuring food reward processes in real-time
The purpose of this project is to conduct a pilot study establishing feasibility of using an established smartphone app, SmartIntake, to measure reward processes surrounding eating occasions in real-time in participants’ own environment.
The app will administer brief survey prompts to participants about craving and hunger before they eat, level of food reward (enjoyment) of their food during their meal, and extent of overeating after their meal, thus capturing opponent process symptoms in real time.
This project will conduct analyses of app data to determine usability (percentage of meals reported using the app; percentage of survey prompts completed per eating occasion, etc) and will also analyze findings from the survey data and qualitative interviews to identify aspects of the app that worked well, and areas or procedures for improvement.
