A Virtual Vocal Tract for Speech Output Using Non-Invasive Brain-Computer Interface

Individuals with severe neuromotor impairments, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, often lose the ability to communicate as a result of their disease. Brain-computer interfaces have emerged as a promising technology for restoring communication to this population, but typically rely on spelling or typing paradigms. The proposed research investigates an alternative approach to brain-computer interface that targets vocal productions through a brain-controlled virtual vocal tract using individuals’ innate knowledge of their past speech production abilities despite present speech motor impairment.
