Peruvian trip reveals progress in some areas, but not others

RTCIL in Peru

RTC/IL Director Glen White and Kelsey Shinnick, graduate research assistant, traveled to Lima, Perú, in January to interview key Peruvian disability leaders as a follow-up to previous visits in 1999 and 2012.

Through the interviews they learned that disability leaders had become more politically involved although there was little progress in disability rights and opportunities. One of the strongest concerns was the lack of accessible public transportation. For example, the Lima metropolitan transit system purchased new mass transit buses but none of them is accessible.

White encouraged those who knew about the situation in Perú to write and submit presentation proposals to the July 25-28 Annual Conference on Independent Living. Two of these proposals have been accepted.
